Head-mounted display projects directly onto the retina

Brother's AirScouter projects the equivalent of a 16-inch display directly onto your retina.

A company representative states, "This display creates a mysterious effect, making it look as if there's a 16-inch screen floating one meter in front of the eyes, and the scenery behind the screen seems transparent as well."
The company expects that the technology will be used in industrial settings at first, specifically for onsite technicians to reference product manuals. There's also head-mounted camera built into the frame of the glasses, which can be used by field workers to send real-time imagery back to headquarters.
"This makes it possible to work in collaboration, while receiving instructions from experts in the office," said the Brother representative.
On the consumer side, you'll apparently be able to connect a phone to the display one day in order to project your handset's screen out in front of you.

Dell Inspiron DUO flipping tablet - an amazing hybrid netbook and tablet

The 10-inch screens serves as both the display for the typical notebook setup as well as a detachable tablet (via a swiveling hinge). It contains Intel’s dual-core Atom N550 processor and runs Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Android. Considering Dell envisions the Inspiron Duo serving two masters — entertainment via the tablet and productivity via the physical keyboard — Windows makes sense, though it remains to be seen if performance will be an issue for the device.

Dell is promising the Inspiron Duo will be available later this year, though no pricing has been revealed. It’s clearly gunning for one of the iPad’s biggest weaknesses — the difficulties using the Apple tablet as a productivity tool without an included physical keyboard — by providing the best of both worlds.

LG Makes 'Optimus' Windows Phone 7 Legit

Monday, September 13, 2010 0 comments
During the IFA trade show on Monday, LG announced that its forthcoming Windows Phone 7 devices will be called Optimus 7 (I guess Optimus Prime was taken?). LG didn't announce any specific devices, but shared details on what we can expect from its new Microsoft-powered smartphones.

The first feature LG boasted about is a new way to interact with DLNA content between devices. DLNA is the standard that allows certified devices to share media via Wi-Fi.

LG's Optimus 7 smartphones will be able to share 720p HD videos, high-resolution photos, and high quality music files with the flick of a finger. LG says that its software allows users to spot other DLNA certified devices, and then, by tossing the content off the top of the screen, share it with those devices.

That means users of LG's Optimus 7 Windows Phone 7 devices can share directly from their phone to their TV or home theater.

"This unique feature is a direct response to the growing need for technologies that empower users to share multimedia content across electronic devices," said Mr. Seong-jin Park, Vice President of Mobile Handset R&D Center at LG Electronics, in a prepared statement.

"LG Optimus 7 smartphones will be at the center of a complete entertainment experience, representing LG's leadership in mobile convergence." LG also makes HDTVs and other consumer electronics.

LG's Optimus 7 devices will ship in the fourth quarter, which is when Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform is expected to launch.

Willow Garage PR2

Your own PR2 personal bot--for just $400,000
"With PR2 now commercially available, we can't wait to see what our new users will develop on our platform," said Willow Garage, which suggests the robot can be used to do repetitive tasks at work or home and aid those who might otherwise need to live in an assisted-living facility. The availability of more than 1,000 software libraries appears to ensure a promising future for the young robot.

The approximately 5-foot-tall, wheeled, two-armed bot features two computers inside its base, each an 8-core server with 24GB of RAM, and a battery system that's tantamount to 16 laptop batteries.

Its head sports two pairs of stereo cameras, one for wide angles and the other for focusing. The eyes are designed to work like a person's in that they take two pictures of a room and try to find common points on which to triangulate. The PR2 also has a tilting laser scanner that helps it create 3D models so it can avoid bumping into walls while it shuffles about tending to your every need.

If $400,000 sounds too steep for you, Willow Robot is offering a $120,000 discount to individuals "who have made significant contributions to the open-source community."
